I don't know if anyone still uses this forum, but my wireless has been consistently failing in Windows XP. I'm pretty sure I could fix it by reformatting the disk and doing a Windows reinstall, but I'm lazy and thats kind of time consuming.

So I know that it's not my wireless router that's messed up, because my mom's computer running Windows is fine too and my computer works fine when I use linux (I have 2 os's on my computer. and yeah, go figure, linux beating windows in wireless? tmbgtalk/-laugh.gif )

My wireless connections thing always shows my router and says "Not Connected" when I try to connect to it, but the internet does work. However, after a few minutes, the connection will drop out, and it will look as though I never tried to connect to that router, so I'll double click to connect it again, it will tell me "Not Connected", but the internet connection will work. Weird, huh? Yeah, I don't know what to do with it. Linux is ok and all, I run Ubuntu, but I also need to use photoshop sometimes and like my video game emulators that don't run properly in ubuntu.

I don't know what to do about yours lajoyce, but I'm having a similar problem, but not so similar
my wireless card works and i'm receiving a signal, but it just doesn't connect for no good reason
it works when I connect through a cord though, and i know it's not the router cuz bobby's on it and i know the card is fine cuz i just got it back from best buy and they said it was tip top

so yeah...problems

i'm sorry you guys. i know nothing about windows. tmbgtalk/dunno.gif

lajoyce- 07-06-2007
This might sound silly, Klim, but did you make sure the wireless on your computer is turned on? That has happened to me before tmbgtalk/-bigblush.gif

Do you have windows XP? If by some odd chance you have the same problem as mine, double click on your network to connect, then click cancel. It will say Not Connected, but then you can connect.

Wireless is so tricky.

(Not that I don't end up spending a lot of time on Windows too.)

yeah I'm sure it's on, this problem has been going on since I think november

no, it's a different problem. No matter what I do, it will not come on
no matter how many times i disconnect and reconnect and repair the connection and everything else.

even the best buy people couldn't help me

tmbgtalk/woo.gif another mac user!

Errm...

So anyway, yeah, wireless problems are really tricky. I would suggest that you flash-update your ROM with the latest firmware for your router, to start. Sometimes freaky things like this are fixed with firmware upgrades.

Of course, before you do that, you should make note of all your settings that are pertinent to your setup. Doing so may point you to a setting you may have forgotten about, like MAC address filtering or something similar.

Then I would just completely blitz the router. Unplug it, leave it unplugged for a day, then plug it back in, update the firmware, reset it and reconfigure it.

Last time I had a problem with my wireless router, I had to call the company, and they had me break a few of my fingers in some ridiculous combination of keystrokes, but it worked!

Sorry that's not terribly helpful. tmbgtalk/-ohwell.gif

tmbgtalk/icon2.gif it sounds like they had you zap your P RAM... tmbgtalk/icon2.gif

BigJohn- 07-09-2007
not quite - P-RAM is on your Mac; they had me reset the router. It was krazy. I had the manual, and read the website, and knew there was some crazy combination of keys to press. I had tried a bunch of them, and of course, the one that I had NOT tried was the one that finally worked. tmbgtalk/tongue.gif

tmbgtalk/-laugh.gif don't it just figure? tmbgtalk/-nut.gif

Hi Bigjohn, thanks for the input!
I reset my router like every day, but I haven't tried upgrading the firmware yet. Also my connection has been horribly slow so I am going to call my ISP tech support sometime this week anyway.

Its funny how wireless works fine with linux for me on the same machine.
Yay for *nix-like OSes! (hah)

biff- 07-10-2007
you know... that's what i would do. i figure if my ISP gives me a free phone support #, i'm gonna call it. tmbgtalk/104.gif

BigJohn- 07-10-2007
Just for clarification's sake, by resetting your router I don't mean pushing the reset button. There's usually a more complete reset function. The difference is that one retains your configuration settings and the other doesn't. I'm guessing that you resetting your router every day does not require you to re-enter all your configurations. Cuz if that was the case, you'd be insane by now.

With my router, a linksys, I had to do something like:

a) Unplug the router
b) Press the reset button and hold it in
c) Plug in the router
d) Let go of the reset button

Something like that. It completely wipes your settings.
