I GOT A SETLIST!!!

Stompy / Boss of Me / Birdhouse / WDTSS / Why did you Grow a Beard / Polk / Careful What You Pack / Happy Birthday FLANS! / Fingertips / Bee of the Bird of the Moth / #3 / We Want a Rock / Everything Right is Wrong Again / HOB: LA / HOB: Anaheim / Damn Good Times / Experimental Film / We're the Replacements / We Live in a Dump / Turn Around / Drink! / This Damn Band (intros) / Purple Toupee / Encore 1: "Space" (Think FOS) / NYC / Stone Pony / Dr. Worm / Encore #2: Alphabet of Nations / Miss. Nights / Istanbul

(listed but not played: Cyclops Rock)

Well, I went to the TMBG concert last night, and it was absolutely awesome!

Doors "opened" at 7pm, but Matt, Jennifer, and I went to the Halo Bar at 5pm (when they opened up) so that we could drink a little and get in early. Actually, before the show, we were walking around U City, and we ended up walking right past Danny Weinkauf and his red pants. He was listening to an MP3 player and on his way back to the venue, so we let him pass without a word (to him, anyway). Our early arrival was also quite nice because (in the Halo Bar) we were able to hear some of the sound check whenever the guys at the bar opened the door to get something from the other side of the bar. If only they could have kept the doors open! Anyway, we ended up inside at 6:45 (wooh! foam hands!), and in the front row (stage right). From then, it was a long wait until the concert began. However, even though it seemed to take forever, the guys got out pretty quickly. Micheal Leviton came out right on time (to my watch) at 8pm, and TMBG came out (*gasp*) at 9pm. Must be easy when the opener just has a ukelele and glockenspiel.

On to Leviton - I quite enjoyed his set. He still seemed a bit awed that he was doing this in front of a "big" crowd, and it was pretty cute. His songs (anti-love songs) were pretty funny, too, though his summer song was about the only really catchy one. Near the end of the set, he said that TMBG fans were great, because it tends to be kinda dangerous coming out on the stage, when you're playing a ukelele. Yup, we like random instruments, don't we!

Anyway, after Michael and the girl on glockenspiel left the stage, we only had to wait about 30 minutes for TMBG to take the stage! The concert started well, getting some of the favorites out of the way, before they played a few new songs. I can't really remember much about the new songs (the ones that haven't even made it to a Podcast yet), except that they were fun and very TMBG. Then, the band played Happy Birthday for Flans, and one of the roadies brought out a cake. Flans said that he was briefly afraid that Linnell had lost it when he started playing the song (I guess since it sounded like a totally random song at the point), but he blew out the candles on the cake, which had a toy car on the top.

Despite the fact that they should be pretty tired at this point, they still seemed to have quite a bit of energy left for this concert. I can't remember much of the banter, but the Johns did talk about going to one of the riverboats after the show and literally phoning it in for the next tour. "Speaking" of phones, I think that it was during "Careful What You Pack" that Flans had all of us raise our cell phones to light the stage. That looked pretty cool - it's amazing to think that how quickly the cell phone revolution moved. I was almost surprised that there weren't more phones (some people must've left theirs in their cars).

Moving on in the show (again, LOVED the setlist!) to the encore, for the first encore, it was Linnell and Marty alone on the stage at first, and they played what was listed as "Space" on the setlist, but sounded a bit like "The Future of Sound". Eventually, the rest of the band came onstage, and they played NYC and the rest of the songs, ending with Istanbul. Jennifer had annoying/stupid people who called it "Constan-i-pole" rather than Constantinople which annoyed her, but we were all impressed with Miller's guitar intro. Honestly, that MAKES the song anymore! Its too bad the show wasn't recorded - just for the sake of hearing that again. Awesome!

After the show, I *Finally* got a setlist (I'll try to scan & post it later)! 17 shows (or so) and I finally got one (though incidentally, I didn't even try for one for most of the shows, but... whatever). Jennifer and I then went to the t-shirt line (the normal gal wasn't there - instead, there were two girls I don't remember seeing before), and made our purchases (Amish t-shirt!), before heading outside, where Flans and Miller were signing autos. I normally don't go after sigs anymore (since I already have them from JL & JF), but I *had* to get my setlist signed. Miller signed by where he made the biggest mistake (Boss of Me), and Flansburgh mentioned that I had the guitar tech's set list (it had scratch-outs on it.)

Jennifer also got sigs (on her ticket), and we left incredibly excited. While we were waiting on sigs, though, there was some guy driving slowly out of the parking lot with Flood on full blast -> right past the makeshift autograph area. Now, once we got to my car, we played a TMBG cd, but I would feel like a total dork if I drove past either Flans or Linnell with one of their songs playing full blast like that. Oh well - to each his own.

Anyway, all together, it was a great night and a GREAT concert!!!

oh well. tmbgtalk/-lol2.gif

did you take any pictures? tmbgtalk/-naughty2.gif

woodsie- 05-07-2006
No pictures - sorry! I get too into the shows to take pictures, usually.

biff- 05-07-2006
tmbgtalk/-lol2.gif that's understandable. tmbgtalk/-wink.gif

i only take em during the first 2 or 3 songs, then i usually put my camera away. it would have to be a little annoying for the band to have flashes going off in their faces through the whole show. tmbgtalk/dunno.gif

I was at the St Louis show and it ROCKED! My first live TMBG though I've been a fan for years. I was expecting some laid back stuff, but these guys gave their all. I did download last years St Louis show from their site, and this show was much better.

I hope they do decide to release this show on MP3. I just read someone else's blog report on this show and she got to ask Dan Miller about makeing this show available.

Anyway, we chatted just a bit. I asked him if they were recording the shows on this tour, and he said they are recording them, they're just not planning on selling them. "Because of the new songs?" I asked, and he confirmed that was why. But he added that they might put out a compilation since they're playing all these neat old tunes they haven't done in a while.

I can't imagine them doing a better full set than they did that show. Hopefully they will reconsider.

And I am seriously going through PodCast withdrawl.

Stand in the front row and pray a lot. After the concert, stick around like a stalker. DO NOT leave until they're all gone. I got the second one, right after ALICE (the gal whose blog ferret read).

Welcome ferret! Where were you seated/standing at the concert?

biff- 05-16-2006
i always hang around, but i'm too slow (& maybe too nice) to get a set list. at the last show i went to, some drunk guy climbed over some poor kid who was smaller than me to get the last one. i wanted to punch his face off. tmbgtalk/+argh.gif

there were a lot of obnoxious drunks at that show. more than i had seen at every other show i'd been to combined. i don't know why. maybe it was the venue. tmbgtalk/dunno.gif (beware The Blue Note, in Columbia MO) tmbgtalk/00000ohnoes.gif

Welcome ferret!  Where were you seated/standing at the concert?

On the left of the stage with the under 21 crowd. Back by the merchandise table. My wife and I plus another couple kind of stood out there. We sat behind the obnoxious drunk/high guy who was screaming and slam dancing. We got to The Pageant right at 8:00pm. To late to get into the center section. We know better for next time.

The other guy and i went to get drinks from the bar before TMBG came on. We tried to take them to our seats and got stopped by a bouncer. No alcohol allowed in that area. So we had to drink in shifts.

Saw a lot of foam fingers. Is there any significance I don't know of?

I picked up an autographed copy of the Venue Songs DVD/CD. Good stuff. I wish they had more of the songs turned into videos though.
