Well, Green Day, R&B star Usher, upstart rapper Kanye West, and the late Ray Charles appear to have racked up the most nominations; and Prince got quite a few, too, for his Musicology album and a few different tracks from it...

Brian Wilson got nods for Best Pop Album (Smile) and Rock Instrumental ("Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" from Smile).

Elvis Costello & the Imposters got nods for Best Rock Album (The Delivery Man) and Duo Or Group Rock Vocal ("Monkey to Man"); Costello also got a Best Male Pop Vocal nod for his cover of "Let's Misbehave" on the De-Lovely soundtrack.

Loretta Lynn got nods for Best Country Album (Van Lear Rose), Female Country Vocal ("Miss Being Mrs."), Country Collaboration ("Portland, Oregon" with Jack White), and Country Song ("Miss Being Mrs." AND "Portland, Oregon").

U2's "Vertigo" got nods for Duo Or Group Rock Vocal, Rock Song, and Short-Form Video.

Wilco's A Ghost Is Born got nods for Best Alternative Album and Recording Package.

Saving the best for last... Johnny Cash's Unearthed got nods for Best Boxed Or Special Limited-Edition Package and Best Historical Album; Johnny also got a nod for Male Country Vocal ("Engine 143" from The Unbroken Circle: The Musical Heritage of the Carter Family), and he and Joe Strummer got a nod for Best Pop Collaboration ("Redemption Song" from Unearthed).

I tend to skip music awards cos I don't like enough nowdays bands, especialy the kind that get nominated for stuff so I don't really care who wins or loses,I stick to Movie awards so I can be outraged at the injustice of it all

I'm glad to see Wilco up for something -- and I hope they do get that Best Alternative Album award.

That's cool. (I don't get to see enough new movies, really -- I always root for the few that I've seen when they're up for anything, and when they're not, I root for the ones I want to see eventually. )

they won't. ignatz said they're up against Modest Mouse.

They're also up against new Scottish band Franz Ferdinand, who are up for a couple other awards and had a big hit this year with "Take Me Out" -- I think the Alternative Album category is going to be a pretty tight race between them and Modest Mouse. (Frankly I'd rather see FF get it over MM -- this past summer, I saw in the New York Times where gave FF's album a rave review. )

I'm watching Citizen Kane right now...

i'm just sittin here waiting for my load to get done.
