The second part of the trilogy: The Two Johns

After Sunday, I was so buzzed about tonight that I wanted to be really close so I got there an hour before Doors. There were about a dozen people in front of me already so I joined the merry throng... some of the people I had met on Sunday were there too, so it was quite a party atmosphere. By the time the doors opened, the queue stretched quite a way back.

Anyhoo, I got right to the front in the middle and I remembered my camera!

The crowd was a bit smaller than Manchester and took a while to really get into things. Corn Mo got things off to a great start (minus his white jacket which he lost in Glasgow)

The Johns duly arrived and kicked right off with Experimental Film (during which some braindead idiot threw a beer can on stage - only DW noticed) followed by a venue song which was cool.

JL was wearing his glasses for this as they had only written it a couple of hours before, and he asked for no spots as he had the lyric written on a piece of paper on his keyboard, hence the grainy shot!

Next... what the heck, it was great! Towards the end JL was getting pretty racked off with a drunken fool who had made his own "backstage pass" and was trying to give it as a "gift" (unwanted) to JL. "No, you see, if you push it right in front of me, it stops me pressing the keys on my keyboard and I can't play the song. Don't you get it?" This buffoon had been a bit of a pain (it wouldn't surprise me if he threw the beer can). Add the fact that a woman also jumped on stage at one point and the band were a bit edgy. Still, they played a full set (with an extra song thrown in for good measure!)

So, what did they play?

I got a setlist! (They also did Stalk of Wheat to open the first intro and Alphabet was a new song "Alphabet of Nations) The squiggles on it are the sigs of Corn Mo and Dan Miller. Dan was packing the sound desk after the gig so I got his sig then and chatted briefly to him. I told him i'd been in Manchester and he asked me which i'd enjoyed most. My reply was that they'd been two totally different shows (and not just the setlists) but probably Manchester as there seemed to be a lot more energy there, band and audience. I thought as I was saying it that it was probably just me as that had been my first TMBG gig, but DM said that the band had said exactly the same thing when they'd gone off stage. My friend also chatted to him about his (my friend's) son idolising DM after the manchester gig (a 10 year old aspiring guitarist) which DM was really happy about! A few other pleasantries and then a chat with

Wow. I'm all giddy, living vicariously through chuckie. I'm super jealous, but happy for you! Good job on the setlist - I've often wondered how people get the setlists. Do they just run up and nab them? Do they auction them off? Do you have to ask before the show?

(sigh)
Someday, they'll come back to Sacramento and I'll invite them all to stay at my house.

Thanks again guys!

I got the set list by waiting at the front after the show and nicely asking a roadie for it. Worked better than the girl who jumped on stage to get one and was politely escorted off. She didn't get it - I did. Maybe she should have remembered this is The Giants, not Sum 42. A few manners gets you a long way!

I'm about to set off for London so will try to write The Return of the Johns sometime Friday. And then I can catch up with whatever else has been going on here recently!

nothing that has happened around here is half as exciting as what's happening there, chuckie. tmbgtalk/-laugh.gif have fun tonight. tmbgtalk/-hello.gif
