she has iTunes. she just didn't know how to convert her songs to mp3 format there. i don't know what format they were to begin with.

they're in aac format by default.

What you do in windows is go to Edit->Preferences, click on the Advanced Tab.
Then click on the Import tab, and choose MP3 from the "Import Using" drop down. Then close the preferences window, and select the song you want to convert. Then go to the Advanced menu, and you'll see an item there called "Convert to <type>" where <type> is the selection you made in the Preferences window. In this case, it will say "Convert to MP3".

And there you have it. Process is the same on a Mac; menu names may be slightly different.

what if someone doesn't have 'convert to mp3' in the advanced menu to select? i know there's a way to get it to show up, but i forget what it is...

(i'm trying to help a different person with a similar problem. they're on a PC)

There's a selection under Advanced saying "Convert Selection to MP3". That might work, but if it's not there then you'd probably have to change some settings.
And if you run into that...contact Ore. :

i have 7.4.2 on my Mac. it's the la-*test*-('") Mac version.

there's a way to get 'convert to mp3' to show in the menu if it's not already there, but i forget what it is. lemme go check something...

ok, there's a topic at my board about a similar thing. the answer i was looking for wasn't there though, so i did a new post to find out. as soon as BigJohn comes along, i'm sure he can tell me how to get it to show up. he's really good at this kind of stuff. i'll let you know when i find out. :thumbs:

ok now it says i can convert, but it's not allowing me to highlight it or click on it :forgot: lol computers suck

Hmm... I'm not sure exactly what is wrong; they should be able to click on a song, then select "Convert to MP3" on the menu.

Curious, though - they ask about converting .mp4 files to .mp3 ... I'm pretty sure .mp4 files are video files. They may contain .mp3 soundtracks within the file, but you generally need special software to extract tracks from movies. Quicktime Pro lets you do it for $30. There may be other software out there that does the same thing.

You could always "hijack" the audio during playback - I use AudioHijack on the mac for it; biff uses something else (I forget what it's called). It would redirect the audio playback to a separate file, which could then be converted to .mp3.

Not sure if that helps. If in fact they're trying to take a video file and save the audio from it, I don't think you can do that in iTunes.

They can use Audacity to convert the audio to .mp3 once it's been captured, but they need to use some tool to hijack the audio first.
