that's what i'm dreading...

school's starting soon. tmbgtalk/-frown.gif
you might expect a forum update drought from me when that time comes.

biff- 08-13-2007
i understand. tmbgtalk/-ohwell.gif

this is the first year of my whole life i'm actually looking forward to the beginning of the school year. Noah is a substitute teacher/tutor, so he'll have work again, & Nathan's scholarships will kick in when school starts, so he'll have money again too. tmbgtalk/-nut.gif

i hope time slows down for you though. tmbgtalk/-crossfingers.gif

i'm sorry, but this thing is just gorgeous. tmbgtalk/drooling3.gif i wish mine was black on the back, cuz then it wouldn't end up looking so smoked up in the future. tmbgtalk/-laugh.gif the air hole thingy is black!

one time a kid at college asked Noah if our old purple Mac had been in a fire. tmbgtalk/-laugh.gif he was all like... nooo. tmbgtalk/+no2.gif

(i know i need to quit..)

they apparently haven't changed the Mighty Mouse though. they really really need to make it to where you can clean the scrolly ball. i already had to make them send me a new one. are they just so cheap to make that they can afford to send you a free one every 6 months? tmbgtalk/icon2.gif (cuz i tell you, as long as i have AppleCare, i'm gonna make em send me new ones) tmbgtalk/MSN04II.gif

A friend of mine had the same problem. I pointed here here:

How to clean your Mighty Mouse

and she was successful in resolving her jumpiness issues.

yeah, that rolling it around on a damp-ish lint free cloth works good right at first. so does blowing it out with canned air. after a while though, both techniques stop working, & alls you can do is get it replaced. tmbgtalk/dunno.gif

(unless you have really great vision & dexterity, then you can break the seal & take it apart & clean it, & then super glue it back together... but i wasn't about to go there) tmbgtalk/-laugh.gif

it's a design flaw, plain & simple. i was really hoping they would fix it on the new Macs, so i could get one of the improved ones the next time i gotta make em replace it... cuz i'll have to. it's just a matter of time. tmbgtalk/-ohwell.gif

Solution: Buy a non-Apple mouse! Not all PC-based mice are bulky and office-like, and you may end up finding them a bit less cumbersome with the left/right clicking and scrollball/wheel. Apple puts design above effectiveness with quite a few things; mice included (it took 22 years for them to give in to the right click!).

That said, I've been a happy MacBook Pro user for two months now. To the possible dismay of some of the hardcore Mac users here, I do primarily use Windows Vista as the operating system on it, but it's just what I'm used to. That, and I like gaming. :] Every now and then I'll try OS X for a few hours, but it just feels like using a computer with one arm tied behind my back; the software feels totally counter-productive for a multitude of tasks to me. It looks and feels nicer than Windows, but severely lacks the familiarity I depend on. Oh, well!

biff- 08-29-2007
ehh, i'll just let em keep sending me free ones till my Apple Care runs out. tmbgtalk/tmbgtalk_wink.gif i love my Mighty Mouse, design flaws & all.

Interesting, Q. I used Vista briefly and found it to be quite different from XP. Granted, I only used it for literally 3 minutes, but it was a little odd. So are you comparing the familiarity to Vista or Windows XP?

What I saw of Vista looked good, but I still like the Mac OSX better. You know, part of my windows hatred is this corporate computer that I use. They have absolutely overloaded it with anti spyware, adware, locked down the security levels and all this other crap, that it takes way, way, WAY too long to start up and shut down. One of the things I like about my Mac is how quickly it starts up and shuts down.

I've been looking at the new iLife '08 ... which you may have, Q. It's got some pretty cool stuff in it. I was debating whether to buy it or not. It seems like it may be worth it. I started watching a 20-minute video on the new features, and after 10 minutes, they were still on iPhoto. I guess most of the changes were to iPhoto. Too bad. iWeb needs some significant rework, too.

i lost a lot of that stuff when i got my new computer. my old one was an eMac, (e for education) & all that schooly stuff came already on it. when Noah's home & he has to work on his resume or school related stuff, he's pretty much screwed. tmbgtalk/tmbgtalk_ohwell.gif

they could fix a few things in iPhoto, but it's not enough to make me buy the whole iLife 08 for it. tmbgtalk/tmbgtalk_dunno.gif

(& ain't you proud of me, Q? i didn't even mess with you for being in a Mac now) tmbgtalk/tmbgtalk_bigblush.gif

WithACapitalQ- 08-29-2007
I believe I ordered my laptop before iLife '08 was released, hehe. As for familiarity, I was comparing OS X to Windows in general; the transition from XP to Vista for me was perfect (I switched over last October during the first release candidate).

Anyway, sucks to hear about the bogged-down PC at work. I personally never install anti-virus software on my own (non-shared) computers; I never really browse or download anything questionable or untrusted, and haven't had a virus since when I was a silly 11-year-old using my old old Dell PC in 2001 or so. Haven't had any spyware turn up in years, either (Vista comes with built-in anti-spyware that runs nightly; Microsoft Defender). Comparing times on the same computer, I'd have to give the startup speed edge to OS X (after all, it's an Apple laptop), but Vista boots up damn fast comparatively. :]

And I am so proud of you, biff! tmbgtalk/tmbgtalk_lol5.gif

I'm much happier with an Apple laptop than I would've been with a Dell or HP or something; the hardware's super-excellent and everything's so clean, mean and fast.
